You Need A
Plan
(Get
Focussed and Avoid
Distraction)
There are some folks that
insist that you do not need a plan. They say that what you need
is a well defined problem and the skills to solve it. This is
the glass half-empty school of thought. Although it certainly
has some value, this is just one part of the
equation.
I like to think of myself as a member of the glass half full
school. The reality for most of us is that we all have a little
bit of both. Some things we are trying to get away from, others
we are attracted to and taking the right steps to get them.
This is known as away-from and towards motivation. If your
self-knowledge is exceptionally good then you will be very
clear how both of these types of motivations affect you. But
for many of us, myself included, the specifics are sometimes a
little hazy.
With a plan we can set ourselves on a course and at least
steer in the right direction when we become swayed by external
events and conditions. This maintains our towards
motivation.
Another reason for having a plan is to protect yourself from
distraction. Distraction costs either money or time and very
often both.
So:
 |
Write down your goals |
 |
Review them regularly |
 |
Plan the steps you need to take to achieve your
goals |
 |
Use task lists |
 |
Prioritise |
